![]() Book SuggestionsAfter completing a unit with a particular novel (like Of Mice and Men) as the focus, I utilize our librarian's expertise to bring in texts that the students might be interested in. With this, I am hoping to intrigue and encourage avid readers and unmotivated readers alike with options that are somehow related to a novel they are already familiar with. | ![]() Flipped ClassroomCurrently, I am utilizing a flipped classroom approach with my AP Human Geography class for efficiency and effectiveness. Students read the text, watch videos and take notes independently at home, then the students are engaged in discussions, extension activities and thorough reviews of the material covered in class. Not only does this maximize our 4 hours in-class together, it also prepares Grade 12 students for the reality of university education. | ![]() English GrowthI created the above Google Sheets document so that I my students could be aware and self-assess according to the Common Core standards for Grade 10 English. Since we do not focus on every standard in each unit, I have the students reflect on their current capabilities (with evidence) for the targeted skills. The standards are on the left-hand side and the categories are tabs along the bottom. It's been very successful in having the students identify their strengths and areas of growth. |

![]() Meta LogsAfter reading, students write Metacognition Logs, which allow them to think beyond the typical reading strategies by exploring their approach to reading. In addition to writing in their MetaLog, they also edit and evaluate their writing so it is one more opportunity to think beyond. | ![]() Self-ReflectionsI have been making it a common practice to have student self-reflect on their behaviour, skills and learning during certain activities. This particular snapshot is from a self-reflection students completed after book club group work as they self-assessed their ability to collaborate effectively, which was the Common Core standard for the day. | ![]() Literacy CirclesThis type of student-led activity is now a staple in my English class since it ensures student engagement and accountability; my students even agreed on their reading assignments and role rotation without my assistance. In groups based on reading ability, the students switched roles every week to make sure everyone had a chance to take on different tasks. |
